Equipment Resources
Here are some resources to help you know what equipment your child will need for their program and where you can find it.
Equipment needs by program
Frost Cats will need classic skis, boots, and poles. These are available for rental at Rikert each Saturday morning.
Bobcats will need classic skis, skate skis, combi boots (or classic boots and skate boots), classic poles, and skate poles.
Wildcats will need classic and skate skis, classic and skate poles, combi boots (or classic and skate boots). Wildcats will also need a simple kick wax set up. This would include a cork and 3 basic hard waxes. This can be purchased at Green Mountain Adventures.
Wax Note for Bobcats and Wildcats
Classic Waxing: As kids start to utilize waxable classic skis, it is important for them to start to understand the basics of kick wax. Different waxes are used for different temperatures and snow conditions. Purchasing a Swix V30 (Blue), Swix V40 (Extra Blue) and Swix V45 (Special Violet) and a cork is extremely helpful but not require for Bobcats. Coaches will guide skiers in wax selection and application on classic days. The club has an ample supply of wax supplies for all skiers.
Glide Waxing: Glide wax is used on both classic and skate skis. Application and removal of glide wax requires more equipment than kick wax. The club will supply benches, tools and wax for kids to learn and practice taking care of their skis.
Where to find it
Rikert Outdoor Center has ski rental options, which need to be paid for separately, and picked up and returned each Saturday. This is a good option for new Frost Cat skiers.
Green Mountain Adventures has a winter-long ski lease program. Please call the shop for more details. They also sell kids’ ski equipment and are a terrific resource for all things cross country skiing.
Ski Swaps: Typically held in the Fall, can be a great way to find good deals on used equipment. Some of the great nearby swaps for xc gear: Cochran’s Ski & Ride Sale, Mansfield Nordic Club Swap
Please don’t hesitate to reach out to us with any questions about equipment. We are always happy to help guide you through this process.
Wear Layers!
In addition to well-fitting ski equipment, the right layers can make a big difference for a child’s experience out on the ski trails. We recommend skiers come prepared with the following clothing for skiing:
Winter Hat: Check out our custom FMN Skida hats!
Mittens or Gloves: We recommend mittens, especially if your child is prone to having cold hands.
Socks: Wool.
Layers: Wear winter clothing to allow for temperature swings while skiing (coat, fleece, vest, snowpants/ski pants, long underwear, etc)
Neckwarmer or Buff: Great protection against cold and wind.
